Est 1989
'Coffee culture' in New Zealand is fresh and new by international standards, but Leigh Thompson has
been a part of Pomeroy's Coffee & Tea Company since its inception in 1989. And even though it
sounds like a really bad television commercial, she was 'so impressed that she bought the business'
over a decade ago. Working in the diverse and stimulating coffee roasting industry has given her
more insight into the true personality of coffee and the character of the much loved bean.
Large Boutique
In the beginning Pomeroy's Coffee and Tea Company was very much a boutique roastery - but with
rapid growth, and a more educated and discerning audience it has grown to become the largest in the
region. In 1999 Pomeroy's roasted 500 kilos of coffee a month, in 2007 Pomeroy's roasts just over
4 ton a month. A phenomenal growth, yet you know quality is maintained when they boast loyal
customers that have been with them since day 1.
Expansion
This rapid expansion continues with the creation of the organic Toxic Coffee brand focusing on
organics and a dedicated coffee roastery soon to be completed in the Wakatu Estate Nelson, New
Zealand to ensure capiblity and quality.
The Pomeroy's Family
Pomeroy's is a family owned and managed business. Leigh is the Managing Director, a very high brow
title she says for someone who does a little of everything, and anything that's required. 'Anything
except driving' Hayden is quick to add. Hayden Thompson (Leigh's son) is the General Manager. He is
heavily involved in the day to day operations, with a keen eye on servicing wholesale clients and
training.
